The term free energy is used in many areas, but most use it to refer to purported transformative technologies which have the potential to dramatically reduce personal energy costs with relatively little capital investment. In other words, you can generate energy for free or almost for free. For example to have a car run on air, or having an engine run on a perpetual motion using and reusing the same amount of energy without the need of adding extra fuel. Sounds pretty impressive? Believe it or not, but it's quite possible too. Once it's ready for public use, it will change our whole planet.
Many free energy claims, such as perpetual motion or extracting zero point energy, are said to be impossible according to today’s accepted laws of physics, some people think otherwise. Cold fusion, while not fundamentally impossible, is not accepted as established by the scientific community. Conspiracy advocates therefore claim that the scientific community has controlled and suppressed research into alternative avenues of energy production via the institutions of peer review, and that the spread of working free-energy technologies are being suppressed by governments and special interest groups (such as the fossil fuel and nuclear industry). Here are some potential free energy methods that if possible and successful could change our world.
Perpetual Motion
The term more commonly refers to any device or system that perpetually (indefinitely) produces more energy than it consumes, resulting in a net output of energy for indefinite time. Today’s law of conservation of energy, which states that energy cannot be created or destroyed, implies that such a perpetual motion machine cannot exist. But some claim that it’s possible, and that such a machine has been produced already by either random individuals or by secret government projects.
The most commonly contemplated type of perpetual motion machine is a mechanical system which sustains motion indefinitely, despite losing energy to friction and air resistance. A second type of impossible "perpetual motion machine" is one which does not violate conservation of energy, but produces work by spontaneously extracting heat from its surroundings, thereby cooling them down, and converting the heat energy into mechanical work. Such machines are forbidden by the second law of thermodynamics that we know today.
That is said, the Law of Conservation of Energy is undoubtedly correct when it shows that more energy cannot be taken out of any system than is put into that system. However, that does not mean that we cannot get more energy out of a system than we put into it. A crude example is a solar panel in sunlight. We get electrical power out of the panel but we do not put the sunlight into the panel - the sunlight arrives on its own. This example is simple as we can see the sunlight reaching the solar panel.
Also the electrons in the molecules of rock formations have been orbiting steadily for millions of years without stopping - at what point will we admit that they are in perpetual motion?
Zero Point Energy
The zero-point energy in physics is the lowest possible energy that a quantum mechanical physical system may have and is the energy of the ground state. The quantum mechanical system that encapsulates this energy is the zero-point field. The concept was first proposed by Albert Einstein and Otto Stern in 1913. The term "zero-point energy" is a calque of the German Nullpunktenergie. All quantum mechanical systems have a zero-point energy. The term arises commonly in reference to the ground state of the quantum harmonic oscillator and its null oscillations.
As a scientific concept, the existence of zero point energy is not controversial although the ability to harness it is. In particular, perpetual motion machines and other power generating devices supposedly based on zero point energy are highly controversial. No device claimed to operate using zero point energy has been demonstrated to operate as claimed (at least in public). No plausible description of a device drawing useful power from a source of zero point energy has been given. Thus, current claims to zero point energy-based power generation systems currently have the status of pseudoscience or constitute outright fraud.
The discovery of zero point energy did not alter the implausibility of perpetual motion machines. Much attention has been given to reputable science suggesting that zero point energy is infinite, but zero point energy is a minimum energy below which a thermodynamic system can never go, thus none of this energy can be withdrawn without altering the system to a different form in which the system has a lower zero point energy. The calculation that underlies the Casimir experiment, a calculation based on the formula predicting infinite vacuum energy, shows the zero point energy of a system consisting of a vacuum between two plates will decrease at a finite rate as the two plates are drawn together. The vacuum energies are predicted to be infinite, but the changes are predicted to be finite. Casimir combined the projected rate of change in zero point energy with the principle of conservation of energy to predict a force on the plates. The predicted force, which is very small and was experimentally measured to be within 5% of its predicted value, is finite. Even though the zero point energy might be infinite, there is no theoretical basis or practical evidence to suggest that infinite amounts of zero point energy are available for use, that zero point energy can be withdrawn for free, or that zero point energy can be used in violation of conservation of energy.
Free Energy Conspiracy
According to energy suppression conspiracy advocates, the main motive behind the suppression of free energy technology is the preservation of the economic status quo and sustained increase of fuel prices. Variations on the energy suppression conspiracy state that free energy cannot be allowed in a capitalist system because the system would break down if it were introduced.
Proponents of this conspiracy theory also claim that certain renewable technologies (such as solar cells and biofuels) and other efficient technologies (as electric vehicles) are being suppressed or weakened by governments and special interest groups.
Alternative and free energy research is typically considered to be pseudo-scientific or unrealistic by the scientific community. Conspiracy theorists allege that this is a deliberate attempt by conspirators to suppress this research. There are various other factors which can prevent funding of some alternative energy development, such as "time and information" and capital costs. Groups behind "the conspiracy" have been said to include various national governments, international automakers, and the petroleum industry.
Thermo-electricity
Thermo-electricity abbreviated as TE refers to a class of phenomena in which a temperature difference creates an electric potential or an electric potential creates a temperature difference. This could be harvested in favour of free energy in many ways. In modern technical usage, the term almost always refers collectively to the Seebeck effect, Peltier effect, and the Thomson effect. Thermoelectricity might be taken to refer generically to all heat engines that are used to generate electricity and all electrically powered heating devices, for which there is an almost arbitrary number of conceivable techniques. In recent years, thermoelectricity has been increasingly used in applications like portable refrigerators, beverage coolers, electronic component coolers, and metal alloy sorting devices. One of the most commonly used materials for such applications is Bismuth telluride (Bi2Te3), a chemical compound of bismuth and tellurium. Such concepts can lead to a second type of "perpetual motion machine" is one which does not violate conservation of energy, but produces work by spontaneously extracting heat from its surroundings, thereby cooling them down, and converting the heat energy into mechanical work.
